Stonington Breakwater and Watch Hill Reefs

reelsteal - 05/31/2011

Did our first bass trip on Monday, Memorial Day.  Didn’t leave the dock until around 9 a.m. and headed straight for the Watch Hill Reefs.  We trolled 9’ers down about 15 feet and dragged a Magnum plug for about 30 minutes wuith no hits.  Then we saw birds working from Sugar Reff all the way to Wiccapessett.  Of course, all six boats in the area hied it over to those birds, but there was plenty of room wince the birds were working over a half mile area, at least.  We slowly trolled over to the birds and did not get any hits.  Saw many sand eels break the surface, but no predator fish.  Since I did not see nets come out on any bots, I headed to my “honey hole” humps off of the Stonington Breakwater where we saw maybe 6-8 birds working and lots of swirls.  Definately striped bass.  Put them down and within 1 minute the first strike on the deep 9’er-32 inches.  Dropped down another 9’er and we limited out within 45 minutes, all fish between 32 and 36 inches.  We then did a bit of catch and release and headed for the barn.  Reel Steal Fishing-Watch Hill, RI
